What is MARPOL Annex VI ?
MARPOL Annex VI, adopted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), covers the prevention of air pollution from ships. Among other things, it sets:
• a global fuel sulphur limit of 0.50% m/m since 1 January 2020;
• a 0.10% m/m limit in Emission Control Areas (ECAs): English Channel, North Sea, Baltic Sea, North America, US Caribbean and, since 1 May 2025, the Mediterranean Sea;
• nitrogen oxide (NOx) emission limits for marine diesel engines;
• energy efficiency and carbon intensity requirements (EEXI, CII, SEEMP).
Why is the MARPOL sample mandatory ?
Every bunker delivery must come with a Bunker Delivery Note (BDN) and a representative sample of the fuel delivered, sealed and signed. This "MARPOL sample" is kept on board, under the ship's control, for at least 12 months after delivery.
The sample can be requested during a Port State Control inspection. A missing, badly sealed or unidentifiable sample exposes the ship to detention, fines and commercial disputes with the bunker supplier.

Frequently asked questions
How much fuel should a MARPOL sample contain?
IMO guidelines (resolution MEPC.182(59)) call for at least 400 ml. Our 1-litre bottles give a comfortable margin.
How long must the MARPOL sample be kept?
At least 12 months after the fuel delivery, under the ship's control. The BDN is kept for 3 years.
What is the numbered security seal for?
It proves the sample has not been opened after sampling. Its number is written on the BDN and on the bottle label.
Do you deliver outside France?
